A Lesson from an Accident

Many times in my life, I tend to agree with the quotation – “Experience is the best teacher”. Do you want to know why? Because as individuals living in this world need to experience the actual pain before believing it for ourselves. We can’t easily devote our heart into something if we did not give it a try. True, isn’t it?

I was reminded of my first accident that has been a part of my life through the years. One summer afternoon, I was playing by myself in the balcony of our house at the second floor. I was the only child and I was five years old that time. I had no companion at all that certain hour. Because of loneliness, I tend to think about foolish things. All of a sudden, an idea popped in my mind.

My mother always told me not to climb the railings that surround our balcony. But that certain hour, my mom visited our neighbors. I thought of climbing the railings, and then perhaps, I could also be like those great circus performers walking on thin ropes being shown on the television. What a childish thought!

I easily managed to climb the railings and tried to walk on it holding the clothes line for support. I was filled with joy because I was able to put into action what I was thinking. I was already daydreaming that I let go of the clothes line. But alas! I lost my balance causing me to fall directly to the backyard.

What an extreme pain I felt that time. I tried moving my body but to no avail. After recovering from the shock, I heard the loud voice my mother, then I lost consciousness.

I feel the people moving around me but I can’t open my eyes. I felt someone carry me to our car. The car traveled with a speed that made me dizzy.

According to my mom, I was in a comatose for two days. I wake up seeing my parents beside me. Thank God, he had given me another chance – chance that I shouldn’t waste but to use in mending my ways.

Because of my experience, I came to value time because I believe that each moment counts. Time is needed shortly. We really don't know if our time living in this world is over so we should make the best of it.
